Kitchen Islands

Kitchen islands are one of the most versatile pieces you can add to your Kitchen. They can improve everything from the design and layout of the space, to the various functions your Kitchen can perform. Need more convincing? Consider these benefits of adding an island to your kitchen.

Plan Out Your Space

Before you start thinking storage options or what range you want on your island, make sure you have the appropriate amount of floor space needed. As a rule, you will need a minimum of 36” of floor space on all sides of an island. If you find that an island is not an option for your kitchen, you could opt for a peninsula. Peninsulas are a practical and functional choice for small kitchens because, with one end fixed to a wall, they take up less floor space.
Additional Storage
If your Kitchen is lacking storage areas, a Kitchen island may solve your problem. The island will give you the option of additional drawers, pull out shelves, and cabinets. Tired of looking at your ugly trash can or recycling bin? Under a Kitchen Island makes a great accessible space because it doesn’t interfere with the main preparation area in the kitchen. You may also consider pull-out cabinets and drawers for storing larger pots and appliances.
Extra seating
A Kitchen Island can act as an informal dining area for the kids or as additional seating when you have friends over for cocktails. Having access to your family or guests is always an advantage while cooking and preparing meals. Even if your Kitchen is small, a counter extension into the adjacent room can act as an island. A Kitchen island is a great place for kids to do homework, keeping them close by while you prepare meals.
A Separate Workstation
If you spend lots of time in the Kitchen cooking, you may need additional counter space. The Island becomes a separate workstation which will allow you to prepare your food without disturbing the rest of your kitchen. You can customize your island with a sink, built in cutting board or even a chopping block. When all of the meal prep is complete, the island can serve as a buffet for serving food during a party.
Amenity Island
An island can be used to add amenities which will make your Kitchen more functional and useful. If you’re looking for a creative sink solution, consider installing it in the Kitchen Island. This setup provides a central spot to wash your hands, drain pasta, scrub dishes or rinse produce. By putting a cooktop or range in the island, the cook can keep dinner moving while also keeping an eye on kids or talking with guests. An island is a great place to install a wine cooler. Next time you entertain, your favorite bottle of wine will be close at hand to share with guests.
Extra Electrical Outlets
Adding electrical outlets will allow you to operate small appliances on your kitchen island. If you’ll be using the island as a cooking area, it’s great to install the outlets near the top, so you can plug in whatever small appliance you might need. There are regulations for outlets. By code, there must be an electrical outlet on each end of an island.
Property Value
Finally, a Kitchen Island can immediately increase your property’s value. An island provides additional storage and counter space, both of which can increase the value of your home. As a design element, a Kitchen Island adds something special to an otherwise ordinary Kitchen.
